AI has the insane ability to generate blogs and articles within seconds. It’s easy and convenient to use, and it’s also free, in some cases. Which is exactly why many small businesses and medical practices have replaced their human contributors with AI.
Before generative AI rolled out to the general public in September 2023, human writers were in such high demand that many of us had to regretfully turn down work for lack of bandwidth. But today, many freelancers agree that the writing landscape feels more barren than ever, which leaves many wondering: have human writers become obsolete? Do we still have a voice? Do we still matter?
AI tools like ChatGPT can certainly produce content quickly, but it’s important to keep in mind that they all lack one very essential component: humanity. And no matter how cool and convenient AI may seem, humanity remains exactly what businesses, brands, and readers crave—and need.
Human writers do matter! Here’s why.
AI Will Never Be Authentic
Humans are designed to connect with humans—not with algorithms, and not with AI. Unlike AI, human writers bring personal experiences, emotions, tones, and personalities to the page.
Humans also understand one another. We can empathize and be real and genuine. Your content needs a human touch if your goal is to bond with your audience and foster trust.
It’s easy to tell when content has been written by generative AI. It often sounds cold, stand-offish, generic, and robotic. Human content, on the other hand, has soul and personality that makes it more relatable. Keep this in mind when deciding whether to use AI or hire a human writer, especially if your line of business is reliant on empathy and human connection.
Humans Ask Better Questions
AI does a pretty great job at generating answers, but its questions often lack real meaning. Human writers dig deeper to get to the meat of the story by asking the “whys” and not the “whats.” Again, we use our emotions and real-life experiences to guide interviews and find information that humans need to fulfill their task, or purpose.
Better questions also leads to better storytelling, which is what your brand needs to stand out from the competition—especially if you’re all using AI to generate content.
Original Thoughts Remain King
Generative AI pulls information from all over the Internet to write blogs and articles. It has algorithms in place to pull from trusted sources, but even authoritative sources have narrow opinions sometimes, or provide inaccurate information.
Also, if everyone is using generative AI to write content, then your competitors’ content will be nearly identical to yours. After all, AI is pulling its data from the exact same information pool. This is starting to make everyone’s content incredibly boring because the same information is being posted nearly word for word all over the internet on competitor sites.
AI writes based on patterns and “remixes” what it finds on the internet under the guise of being original. But human writers can create new ideas based on unique perspectives, observations, and experiences.
Originality can cut through the noise and make your content more readable. This is where human writers continue to shine.
Ethics and Empathy Matter
Human writers understand the importance of ethics, as well as the consequences of being unethical, insensitive, and inaccurate. We consider context in ways AI doesn’t, because AI is not human and also doesn’t have years of experience like we do.
Machines can’t feel, and they can’t empathize. If you run a medical practice, how do you expect AI to empathize with patients after a major surgery? It simply doesn’t work. You need a human who understands, and who can empathize and relate.
At the end of the day, remember that AI is only a tool. It is intended to make your work a bit easier, and to handle repetitive tasks. But it cannot connect with us as humans, which is exactly why human writers will always be valued, and why we will never become obsolete.
