How to Do Social Media When You Totally Hate It

There are lots of legitimate reasons to hate social media these days, but no matter how you feel about it, there’s no denying it’s great for business. If you’re a social media hater (like me), perhaps you came here looking for ways to make it more enjoyable. Hopefully these tips can help.

Use Only Your Favorite Platform

You don’t need to be on every social media platform, especially if you’re just starting out or trying to get into a rhythm. If you favor one platform for any particular reason, just stick with that one (at least in the beginning).

Like with everything else in life, if you enjoy doing something, you’re more likely to keep doing it, which is exactly why you should post only on your favorite platform. After you get into a groove and feel more comfortable with it, you can start using other platforms (if that’s your goal).

Here’s another way to look at it. If you prefer certain types of media over others, such as video content, stick to using video-based platforms like YouTube and TikTok, and avoid platforms that don’t support or optimize video content.

No matter what you do, remember the importance of being on the same platform(s) as your target audience. If your target audience isn’t there, you’re basically talking to nobody.

Schedule Without Scrolling

Resist the urge to scroll feeds if you generally stay off social media to avoid negative content. Just log in, schedule your content, and move on with your day.

Those social media “gurus” out there will say, “But wait, engagement is important, too!” While it’s true that engaging with users can certainly elevate your content, don’t sweat it in the beginning. Focus on establishing a presence and posting consistently, and put engagement off until you feel more comfortable with being on social media.

Play With Social Media Prompts

Remember those writing prompt assignments we used to get in English class? I loved those and I still think they’re lots of fun. Guess what? You can find lists of social media prompts for businesses and marketers in various places on the web.

Some good, simple examples are, “Share a tutorial or how-to for one of your top-selling products or services” and “Ask your followers/audience to share their favorite memory or story related to your brand.”

Consider asking AI to provide you with social media prompts related to your business, which can help if you’re feeling low on inspiration.

Be More Authentic and Human

Lots of brands come across as overly fake and/or salesy on social media, which isn’t too fun. Content that lacks personality isn’t at all appealing, especially in an age where AI has pretty much taken over content generation.

I’ve been reading lots of articles here and there that say if you want your human-generated content to rank higher than AI-generated content, the message needs to actually sound and feel as if it comes from a human.

If you’re in a social media rut because you no longer enjoy talking to your audience, or feel that your “voice” isn’t your true voice, try being more honest and human. This makes your content more relatable, and more attractive. A little bit of humanity can go a long way toward helping you connect more closely with your target audience.

Don’t Forget To Repurpose

Do you feel tongue-tied or experience writer’s block when trying to create social media posts? No worries—just repurpose your existing content.

Newsletters, blog posts, press releases, promotions, and pages for new products and services can all make for great social media posts. You don’t necessarily need to devise new, original content to engage your audience—just link back to important announcements and other content already published on your site.

Use Automation Tools

If the very idea of spending time on social media makes you sick to your stomach, consider using automation tools, which can be incredibly time-saving.

Social media management tools like Hootsuite and SproutSocial allow you to schedule posts for all your accounts from one convenient and user-friendly platform. Many of these automation tools also come with many other valuable features to make your job easier, such as built-in analytic services and link shorteners.

Here are some of the top-rated social media management tools:

I’ve personally only used Hootsuite to manage client accounts, but I’ve heard great things about the other platforms as well.

A Few Last Observations and Parting Words

Maybe you feel that your brand is too “grown up” for social media. Or, maybe your brand performs so well it doesn’t need social media at all. Regardless of your reason for not using social media, lots of us understand where you’re coming from, and we totally get it.

Trader Joe’s has never had official social media accounts (at least they didn’t until recently), and yet everyone loves them! Apple is another major brand that has no social media. I’m sure if you take a moment to think about it, you could identify lots of popular, successful hot spots in your local area that simply don’t use social media.

In conclusion, don’t fret if you simply don’t like social media. Many people out there feel exactly the same way. But hopefully the above tips can help make it more bearable for you!

  1. […] Social media still feels fake to me, as always. But in an era of generic, AI-generated content, it looks like being “bad” and awkward at social media may finally work for people like us who genuinely hate it. […]
